Lighting Lives with Care and Compassion: CBOA Bhopal’s 11-Year Diwali Tradition

“The Most Beautiful Light of Diwali Is the Smile We Bring to Someone Else’s Face” – K. K. Tripathi, Vice President, CBOA

Vivek Jha, Bhopal: Diwali is traditionally celebrated as the festival of lights, happiness and togetherness. But for the Canara Bank Officers’ Association (CBOA), Bhopal, the festival has taken on a deeper meaning over the past 11 years. Through a unique social initiative, CBOA has been bringing festive happiness to families in need by extending not only material support but also care, compassion and a sense of togetherness.

The initiative reflects CBOA’s belief that an organisation’s responsibility goes beyond professional commitments. During Diwali, the association reaches out to families who need support and shares the joy of the festival with them.

In an exclusive interview, Shri K. K. Tripathi, Vice President, CBOA, spoke about the organisation’s 11-year-old Diwali tradition, its social purpose, the participation of its members and the message of compassion that the initiative seeks to convey.

Q1. CBOA is an organisation of bank officers, yet it has been actively involved in social initiatives. What is the objective behind this Diwali initiative?

K. K. Tripathi:

We believe that the identity of any organisation is defined not only by its professional and organisational activities but also by its responsibility towards society.

CBOA has always valued social sensitivity, compassion and a sense of responsibility towards the community. Diwali is an occasion when we celebrate happiness and togetherness, and we believe that this happiness becomes more meaningful when it is shared with families who need a little support, care and companionship.

Our objective is therefore not simply to distribute material items, but to make people feel that they are remembered, cared for and are an important part of society.

Q2. This initiative has been continuing for the past 11 years. How do you view this long-standing tradition?

K. K. Tripathi:

For us, this is not merely an annual event. It is a continuous commitment towards serving society.

The fact that this initiative has continued for 11 years gives us immense satisfaction. With the guidance and support of our respected General Secretary, Shri K. Ravikumar Ji, and the collective efforts of all office bearers and members of the CBOA Bhopal Unit, this tradition has continued successfully.

What makes us particularly happy is the enthusiasm with which our colleagues participate in the initiative. Their involvement shows that social responsibility is not just an idea but something that can become a collective effort.

Q3. What activities have been undertaken as part of this year’s Diwali initiative?

K. K. Tripathi:

Our endeavour is to understand the actual needs of the families we reach out to and provide meaningful assistance accordingly.

As part of the initiative, we provide sweets, clothes, bedding, educational materials for children and other essential items. However, our objective goes beyond material assistance.

We also make an effort to spend quality time with these families and share the festive spirit with them. Sometimes, a few moments of conversation, care and companionship can be as valuable as any material support.

We want them to feel that society stands with them and that they are not alone in their journey.

Q4. What kind of inspiration do such social programmes provide to CBOA members?

K. K. Tripathi:

The biggest inspiration comes from seeing the smiles on the faces of the families we meet.

When our colleagues see the happiness and warmth generated through these small efforts, the sense of inner satisfaction they experience is greater than any award or recognition.

Such initiatives also strengthen unity, mutual understanding, compassion and social responsibility among our members. They remind us that our professional responsibilities are important, but our responsibilities towards society are equally meaningful.

For our members, this is an opportunity to come together for a purpose that goes beyond the workplace.

Q5. What message would you like to give to the general public on the occasion of Diwali?

K. K. Tripathi:

My humble appeal to everyone is to make someone else a part of your happiness this Diwali.

It is not necessary to offer something big. Even a small gesture of kindness, a thoughtful act or a few moments of companionship can make someone’s festival truly memorable.

In my opinion, the most beautiful light of Diwali is the one that shines as a smile on someone else’s face.

If each one of us takes a small step towards sharing our happiness, the true spirit of Diwali can reach many more lives.

A Message of Compassion Beyond the Workplace

The 11-year Diwali tradition of CBOA Bhopal reflects an important message: festivals become more meaningful when happiness is shared.

Through this initiative, CBOA has sought to create a culture of compassion and social responsibility among its members while bringing moments of joy to families who need support.

The initiative also highlights how professional organisations can contribute to society through sustained and meaningful community engagement.

As Shri K. K. Tripathi puts it, the real essence of Diwali lies not merely in lighting lamps, but in lighting up lives with care, compassion and kindness.
